BAHP Supports Period Action Day 2024

Period Action Day is Saturday, October 12th. Period Action Day is a global day of action to end period poverty and stigma through advocacy, education, and service.

BAHP is taking a stand against period poverty and stigma in support of Period Action Day 2024.

According to PERIOD., “Nearly 1 in 4 students in the US struggle to afford period products. Period poverty is real and happening NOW. Lack of access to period products and menstrual health education perpetuates harmful taboos surrounding menstruation and forces people who menstruate to resort to unsafe and/or unhygienic methods to manage their periods.”

PERIOD ACTION DAY (PAD) was started in 2019 by PERIOD. and was originally named National Period Day. In 2020, it was renamed to Period Action Day and now serves as a global day of advocacy to celebrate the impact of youth activists in the menstrual equity movement and propel the movement forward with calls to action for everyone

PERIOD. is a global, youth-fueled nonprofit that strives to eradicate period poverty and stigma through service, education, and advocacy. Through the distribution of menstrual products, promotion of youth leadership, and championing of menstrual equity in policy, PERIOD. aims to center those disproportionately affected by period poverty and support local efforts for menstrual equity.

Period poverty is the limited or inadequate access to menstrual products or menstrual health education as a result of financial constraints or negative socio-cultural stigmas associated with menstruation.

Someone who experiences period poverty may experience the diminishment of human dignity and ongoing inability to fully participate in educational, professional and personal endeavors.

PERIOD. and Thinx  released the 2023 State of the Period Study in October 2023- the only publicly available study tracking the impact of period poverty among U.S. teenage students.

PERIOD. explains, “The third installment of this survey found that almost a quarter (23%) of teens still struggle to afford period products, unchanged from 2021. However, students report a 7% increase in accessing period products at school, and a decrease in period stigma.”

The study also found:

44% of teens report stress and embarrassment due to a lack of access to period products.

92% of teens agree periods should be recognized as an indicator of good health rather than as something dirty or gross – a 7-point increase from 2021.

BAHP supports PERIOD. and their actions to make a change.
