Diaper Need Awareness Week: Why Clean Diapers Matter for Every Baby
A clean diaper means a happy, healthy baby — but for millions of U.S. families, that basic need is out of reach. This Diaper Need Awareness Week, the Center for Baby and Adult Hygiene Products (BAHP) is helping raise awareness about diaper insecurity and why it deserves more attention.
What Is Diaper Need?
Diaper need, also called diaper insecurity, means not having enough clean diapers to keep a baby dry and healthy. According to the National Diaper Bank Network's 2026 Diaper Check, nearly 1 in 2 U.S. families with young children can't afford enough diapers for their infant or toddler.
The consequences go beyond discomfort. Without an adequate diaper supply:
Babies face a higher risk of painful rashes, urinary tract infections, and other health issues
Parents may experience increased stress and, for mothers, higher rates of maternal depression
Families can be shut out of child care, which typically requires a daily supply of diapers
1 in 4 parents miss work or school because they can't afford the diapers needed to leave their child in care
Why Existing Programs Don't Fill the Gap
It's a common misconception that programs like SNAP or WIC can help cover diaper costs — they can't. These are nutrition assistance programs and don't include diapers. TANF cash assistance can technically be used for diapers, but only a small fraction of eligible families receive it, and the amount rarely stretches to cover diapers along with rent, utilities, and other essentials.
A Basic Need, Not a Footnote
Clean diapers are a fundamental part of infant health and family stability — not an optional extra. Diaper need touches families in every state, and it's a problem that research, policy, and community support can help solve.
